One of the reasons why this is called Stockholm syndrome is because of a hostage robbery in the town of Stockholm in England. There were two robbers and they had four hostages. Obviously the police surrounded them, but couldn't get to the robbers. Instead the robbers started to act really nice to their hostage, making them believe that the robbers were actually good people. Once the robbers let the hostages go, they begged the police to be lenient on their sentence even though one was shot in the leg (but that hostage actually volunteered to get shot in the leg).
First off, Stockholm is in Sweden, not England. Secondly, the interesting thing about this case is we don't know if the robbers ever tried to act nice to them, because with Stockholm syndrome it doesnt matter, when you believe that you are at risk of death your mind tries to rationalise your captors behaviour so that you act nicer to them and that they will hopefully spare you. Stockholm syndrome is basically your mind changing your personality to suit your captor so they wont kill you
