Rant thread

I'll start

so for some background, I work in the maintenance team of what might just be the dustiest factory on earth. I wont go into more specifics because this is the only factory in my country that produces what it does and I dont want to dox myself. 

With that said:

a few weeks ago we had an issue, machine that broke down

no worries, it happens 

so they call a colleague of mine, lets name him Josh, to go look at it

now, Josh is by no means a bad guy, but he's not a good technician

for starters he outright refuses to do anything electrical, despite being qualified 

so Josh goes and takes a look around at all the mechanical bits, and doesnt manage to find anything 

so he assumes it must be electrical and calls me over

the issue was a feed screw not turning

vfd gave an overcurrent fault 

so I spend the next hour and a half checking the motor, the vfd, the plc and every single wire and cable 

and find nothing

at this point I was getting somewhat agitated because the production foreman was up my ass about needing the machine asap 

so to take my mind off it for a moment I decide to just quickly look over the mechanical side of things

which, if you remember, Josh had supposedly checked earlier 

and the mechanical side of this is not a lot mind you, its a motor, a gear reduction and a screw

surprise, surprise, literally the first thing I look at, the coupling between the gear reduction and the screw, has a bearing thats completely exploded from dust getting inside

cue me having to spend 2 hours working late to replace the coupling because production wanted it ready that night
